MikroTik netPower 15FR

The MikroTik netPower 15FR switch, part of the innovative GPEN concept, is designed to replace traditional GPON base stations and optical splitters by leveraging the speed of fiber and the versatility of Ethernet in a unified solution. This switch is tailored for Internet Service Providers (ISPs) aiming to efficiently deliver internet to individual apartments without the complexity and high costs associated with older technologies. Similar to GPON, GPEN solution will require clients to provide power, but instead of powering GPON’s ONT device, power will be used for extending the Ethernet cable (with our GPeR devices) and powering the netPower device. That is the GPEN analogue of GPON splitters – netPower provides additional functionality and possibilities.

The netPower 15FR features an ARM 32-bit architecture and a powerful 98DX224S switch chip, offering a non-blocking throughput of 3.6 Gbps, a switching capacity of 7.2 Gbps, and a forwarding rate of 5.4 Mpps. This high-performance capability ensures smooth data processing and speedy network operations, crucial for modern networking demands.

Encased in a rugged outdoor enclosure measuring 304 x 212 x 71 mm, the netPower 15FR is designed to withstand harsh environmental conditions ranging from -40°C to 70°C. This makes it suitable for installation in a variety of settings, including damp attics, elevator shafts, and outdoor poles, enhancing its versatility and deployment options. The netPower 15FR is certified with CE, EAC, and ROHS, and holds an IP54 rating, indicating a high level of protection against dust and water splashes, which is essential for any outdoor networking equipment.

One of the standout features of this switch is its 15 reverse PoE ports, which simplify infrastructure by allowing the switch to be powered directly from connected devices, potentially from just a single client. This feature significantly reduces the need for additional power sources in hard-to-reach places. The 16th Ethernet port also supports passive PoE out, delivering power to other PoE-capable devices with the same voltage applied to the switch itself. For high-speed connectivity, the netPower 15FR is equipped with two SFP ports, supporting up to 10 Gbps fiber connections that enhance network capacity and reliability. These ports are ideal for backhaul links and ensuring high-speed access to the core network.

With a maximum power consumption of 29 W and just 10 W without attachments, the switch is engineered for energy efficiency. This is complemented by passive cooling, which maintains optimal operation without the need for mechanical cooling fans. The device also features comprehensive monitoring systems including CPU temperature and voltage monitoring to ensure stable performance.

The switch can run on either MikroTik’s RouterOS or SwitchOS, offering flexibility in network management. RouterOS provides a full suite of routing capabilities while SwitchOS is optimized for switch configuration and management, allowing network administrators to tailor the device to their specific needs. This switch is particularly advantageous for ISPs that require a scalable, high-performance network management solution that can be deployed in a variety of outdoor environments. It lowers costs by reducing the need for extensive power infrastructure and simplifies installations, making high-speed internet delivery more accessible and efficient.
